Breed History
In the 1800s, English lace workers created the French Bulldog by breeding a miniature bulldog for their personal use. The lace industry moved to northern France during the height of the Industrial Revolution, taking the Bulldogs with it.
The toy Bulldog has been bred with numerous breeds over the years, which is how they got their bat ears.
This cute dog was quickly found by Parisians, which helped the breed become well-liked among urban dwellers. They were spotted in Parisian dancehalls and sidewalk cafes with their human companions. Even Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Dega included French Bulldogs in their artwork.
