Barbari goat is a breed of little domestic goat. Which is found in vast areas of India and Pakistan. In India it is distributed in Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and in Pakistan in Punjab and Sindh districts.
The Barbari goat breed is named after Barbara, a coastal town in the Indian Ocean. The Barbari goat breed is one of the 20 classified breeds in India. And it is found mostly in the northwestern arid and semi-arid areas. It is also reported from Mauritius, Nepal and Vietnam.

The Barbari breed is a solid goat. Its head is small and clean. There are ears and small horns pointing upwards.
Barbari goats have a wide range of coat colors, but creamy white with small gray patches is the most common. The length of the male and female Barbari breeds ranges from about 65 cm to 75 cm, respectively.
The adult Barbari goat weighs up to 40 kg and the female weighs up to 25 kg. Milk production is 1 to 1.5 kg per day.
Barbari goats have a curious nature. So they eat a variety of foods that are sweet, bitter and salty. Barbari goats have a habit of urinating on food. Which causes food spoilage. Therefore, a special place should be used to prevent food spoilage.
Barbari goats like to eat alfalfa, garlic, peas, beans, guar, and corn fodder, and it is suitable for their energy and milk production. They also eat the leaves of mango, neem, berry and papaya trees. ۔ They also eat root plants such as carrots, potatoes, vegetables, and grasses.
Barbari goats are famous for producing triples. They are prolific breeders. Barbari goats get mature at 10-11 months of age and start showing estrus. When mating takes place, she becomes pregnant, and after about five months, the baby is born. Their lactation period is 159 days. Their infant mortality rate is lower than other generations.
- For the healthy development of pregnant goat dry her off before 6-8 weeks of delivery and take her to clean room cover with straw on a floor before 15 days of expecting a kid.
- For newborn care, clean the nostrils, ears, and face with the help of cotton and remove the placental membrane. Clean the udder of goat with texture iodine then gives the first colostrums drink to the kid after 30 minutes of birth.
- After delivery, clean the room and backside of goat with iodine or neem water. Give sugary liquid to goat then hot feed that will be consist of ginger, salt, metal sawdust, and sugar.
Disease and Cure
Coccidiosis: It set up mainly in young kids. Its cause is the coccidian parasite. The symptoms include dehydration, diarrhoea, and fever.
Cure: Biosol medicine is given to once in a day for about 5-7 days to get a treatment from coccidiosis. It can also be handled with Corid or Sulmet.
Enterotoxaemia: It is also known as overeating disease. The signs are loss of appetite, high temperature, convulsions, or death.
Cure: Yearly booster vaccination is given to avoid it. A treatment of Antitoxins of C and D type is also available.
Acidosis: It is mostly caused due to overeating of dense food. The symptoms are Teeth grinding, muscle twitching, and bulging.
Cure: Stop overfeeding and give soda bicarbonate (2-3 oz) to treat this disease.
Pregnancy toxemia: It is a metabolic disease. The signs are loss of appetite, sweet-smelling breath, laziness.
Cure: Propylene glycol is given twice a day along with water and sodium bicarbonate will help to treat toxemia.
Ketosis: It happened due to ketones which cause a lack of energy in the body. Decreased milk production, loss of appetite, and having sweet-smelling breath are the symptoms of the disease.
Cure: Drenching of glucose will help to cure ketosis.
Pneumonia: It creates illness on the lungs, and the signs are respiratory problems and fever.
Cure: Certain antibiotics are given to cure disease.
